James Whitaker has painted the high desert landscapes of the American Southwest for over 25 years. Working primarily plein air, he captures the particular quality of light at altitude ... how it bleaches and intensifies simultaneously. His work is held in private and corporate collections across the country.
Artist Statement
The Southwest teaches you about color because the light strips everything back. There is no softening. You either see what is there or you miss it entirely. I have been trying to see it for twenty-five years.
Process & Studio Notes
Exclusively plein air for primary works. Sets up on location for 2-4 hours per session, working small (8x10 to 16x20) and returning to the same sites in different seasons. No studio completion from reference photos.
