Commission
An arrangement where a buyer pays an artist to create a new, original artwork to specific requirements.
Also known as: custom commission, commissioned artwork
A commission is an agreement between a buyer and an artist to create a new original artwork. The buyer provides a brief (subject, size, medium, mood, timeline, budget), and the artist creates the work to those specifications.
Commissions differ from buying existing work in that the piece does not yet exist when the agreement is made. This gives the buyer input on what is created, while leaving the artistic execution to the artist.
On BuyHumanArt.com, commissions are routed through an inquiry system. We match the project to appropriate artists and facilitate the introduction. The commission agreement and payment are arranged directly between the buyer and the artist.
Standard commission practice typically involves a deposit (30-50%) at the start, with the balance due on completion.
